The Big Bang Theory Season 3

3-3 The Gothowitz Deviation

Wolowitz and Raj visit a goth* nightclub to pick up women, taking on their own goth persona, tattoo sleeves. At the bar, they picked up two girls, and one of the girls sees into Wolowitz and suggests they go get tattoos together. Wolowitz, thinking he is going to score, agrees to go, but all goes bust when he chickens out of getting a real tattoo. Meanwhile, Sheldon is trying to use chocolate as positive reinforcement** to train Penny to behave how he likes. It seems to work very well, but finally Penny shows that sex works even better than chocolate to modify behaviour.

Word Review

[The apartment kitchen]
(Penny is cooking breakfast while singing and dancing along to "Man I Feel Like A Woman" by Shenia Twain. Sheldon enters.)
Penny: Morning, Sheldon. Come dance with me.(おはよう、シェルダン。
Sheldon: No.
Penny: Why not?
Sheldon: Penny, while I subscribe to the many worlds theory which posits the existence of an infinite number of Sheldons in an infinite number of universes, I assure you that in none of them am I dancing.(ペニー、僕は無限の数の宇宙において無限の数のシェルダンが存在するって仮定する多元宇宙論を支持してるけど、それらのどの宇宙においても僕はダンスをしてないって保証するよ。)
Penny: Are you fun in any of them?(そのうちのどれかは楽しいの?)
Sheldon: The math would suggest that in a few I'm a clown made of candy.
Penny: All right, want some French toast?(わかったわ、フレンチトースト食べる?)
Sheldon: It's Oatmeal Day.(今日はオートミールの日だ。)
Penny: Tell you what, next French Toast Day, I will make you oatmeal.(次のフレンチトーストの日教えて、その日にオートミール作ってあげるわ。)
Sheldon: Dear Lord, are you still going to be here on French Toast Day?(なんてこと、君はフレンチトーストの日にもここにいるつもりかい?)
Leonard: Morning.(朝ね。)
Sheldon: Look, Leonard, Penny made French toast.(見て、レナード、ペニーがフレンチトースト作ったよ。)
Leonard: Sorry. I haven't given her your schedule yet.(ごめん、彼女に君の予定を教えてなかったよ。)
Sheldon: It's an iCal download, she can put it right in her phone. And I thought we agreed that you'd have your conjugal visits in her apartment.(それはiCalのダウンロードだ、彼女の携帯にすぐに入れられるよ。
Leonard: We did, but there were extenuating circumstances.(合意してたよ、でも酌量すべき事情があったんだ。)
Sheldon: I see. Did her abysmal housekeeping skills finally trump her perkiness?(わかった、彼女の救い難い家事能力が結局彼女の快活さに勝ったのかい?)
Leonard: No, her bed kind of… broke.(いや、彼女のベッドが...
Sheldon: That doesn't seem likely. Her bed's of sturdy construction. Even the addition of a second normal size human being wouldn't cause a structural failure, much less a homunculus such as yourself.(あり難いようだけど。
Penny: A homunculus?(ホムンクルス?)
Leonard: Perfectly formed miniature human being.(完全な形状の小人のことさ。)
Penny: Oh, you're my little homunculus.
Leonard: Don't do that.
Penny: Sorry. Okay, who wants syrup and who wants cinnamon sugar?(ごめんなさい、シロップ欲しい人?
Sheldon: I want oatmeal.
Penny: Yes, well, I want a boyfriend whose roommate isn't a giant pain in the ass.(いいわ、えーと、私はトラブルメーカーをルームメートに持たない恋人が欲しいわ。)
Sheldon: I'm sure that will happen soon enough. But in the meantime, I still want oatmeal.(それならすぐにかなえられると思うよ。
Penny: You know what, I give up.
Sheldon: I can't be impossible. I exist. I believe what you meant to say is, "I give up, he's improbable."(僕はあり得なくはなれない。
Leonard: Sheldon, you really need to find a better way of dealing with Penny.(シェルダン、君はペニーとの付き合い方でもっとうまいやり方を探した方がいいよ。)
Sheldon: What am I supposed to do, eat French toast on a Monday? Now, that would be impossible.(僕にどうしろって言うんだ、月曜にフレンチトースト食べろっていうのか?)
Leonard: I'm just saying, you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.(僕が言いたいのは、蜂蜜を使えば酢よりももっと多くのハエを捕まえられるってことさ。)
Sheldon: You can catch even more flies with manure.
Leonard: It's a… (gives up)
Sheldon: Boy, that does smell good. Too bad it's Monday.(おお、それはいい匂いがする。

[The apartment]
Penny: Okay, so Kim the night manager went on maternity leave, and her husband's name is Sandy, right? So get this, her replacement is a woman named Sandy whose husband's name is Kim.(オーケー、それで夜の責任者のキムが産休に入って、彼女の夫の名前はサンディーだったの、いい?
Leonard: Wow!
Penny: I know. What are the odds?(でしょ。
Sheldon: Easily calculable, we begin by identifying the set of married couples with unisex names. We then eliminate those unqualified for restaurant work, the aged, the imprisoned and the limbless, for example.
Leonard: Sheldon! it's an amazing coincidence, can we leave it at that?(シェルダン、これって驚くべき偶然なんだ、それでいいんじゃない?)
Sheldon: I'm sorry. Ooh, Penny, it's as if the Cheesecake Factory is run by witches.(ごめん、おー、ペニー、まるでチーズケーキ。
Penny: Ooh, Sheldon, it's as if you don't think I'll punch you.(うー、シェルダン、私がパンチ食らわさないって思ってるみたいね。)
Leonard: Come on, you guys, let it go.(やめてくれ、君達、いい加減にしてよ。)
Penny: Fine, whatever. Are you finished?(いいわ、どうでも。
Sheldon: Well, thank you. How thoughtful. Would you like a chocolate(ああ、ありがとう、何とありがたい。
Penny: Um, yeah, sure, thanks.
Leonard: What was that?
Sheldon: You said be nice to Penny. I believe offering chocolate to someone falls within the definition of nice.(君がペニーにやさしくしろって言っただろ。
Leonard: It does. But in my experience, you don't.(それはそうだけど、僕の経験からすれば、君はそうしない。)
Sheldon: There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.(天地の間には、ホレ-ショ、君の哲学の中で夢見た以上のものがあるんだ。)
Leonard: Yeah, yeah, now that's you, obnoxious and insufferable.(そう、そう、それは君だ、不快で我慢のならない。)
Howard: (arriving, in goth gear) What's going on, day dwellers?(どうしたんだい、昼の住人たちよ?)
Penny: Oh, man, did the Kiss Army repeal don't ask, don't tell*?(おー、すごい、Kissファン・クラブは「聞くな、言うな」を撤廃したの?)
Howard: No. Raj and I are going a goth club in Hollywood to hang with the night people.
Penny: Oh, wow, you're actually going out like that?(おー、ワオ、あなた達本当にそんな格好で行くの?)
Howard: No, no. I'm going out like this.(いや、こんな恰好で行くんだ。)
(Whips off jacket to reveal tattoos up both arms)
Leonard: Howard, what did you do?
Howard: They're called tattoo sleeves. Look. I bought them online, Raj got a set, too. Fantastic, right? Put them on, have hot sex with some freaky girl with her business pierced, take them off, and I can still be buried in a Jewish cemetery.(タトゥー・スリーブって言われてるやつさ。
Sheldon: You know, I've always wanted to go to a goth nightclub.(僕はいつもゴス・ナイトクラブに行きたいって思ってたんだ。)
Howard: Really?(本当?)
Sheldon: Bazinga! None of you ever see my practical jokes coming, do you?(バズィンガー!
Howard: Okay, how about you two? Look, I've got some extra tattoo sleeves.(オーケー、君達二人はどう?
Leonard: Why are you carrying extras?(どうして余分なタトゥー・スリーブ持ってるの?)
Howard: Well, In case I snag one on someone's nipple ring.(えーと、誰かの乳首のリングに引っ掛けて裂けちゃった時のためさ。)
Penny: Uh, yeah, I think we'll pass.(うー、そうね、私たちはパスよ。)
Howard: Oh, is the missus speaking for the couple now?(おー、奥さまはカップルについて言ってるの?)
Leonard: In this case, you bet she is.(このケースではそうだね。)
Howard: (after Raj whispers) Yes, she's pushy and yes, he's whipped, but that's not the expression. Come on, I want to stop at Walgreens and pick up some more eyeliner.(そう、彼女は押しが強い、それにそう、彼はいいなり、でもそれは表現の問題じゃない。
Leonard: They're gonna get beaten up at that club.(彼らはクラブでひどい目にあうよ。)
Penny: They're gonna get beaten up at Walgreens. Oh, sorry, Sheldon, I almost sat in your spot.(彼らはウォルグリーンでひどい目にあうわ。
Sheldon: Did you? I didn't notice. Have a chocolate.(そうなの?
Penny: Thank you.

[The goth club]
Raj: I think we're fitting in quite nicely.(僕らすごくよくなじんでる気がする。)
Howard: It'd help if you weren't drinking light beer.(君がライト・ビール飲んでなきゃもっとよかったのに。)
Raj: Oh, what's so gothic about vodka and cranberry juice?(おー、ウォッカ・アンド・クランベリー・ジュースがなんでそんなにゴス的なの?)
Howard: Hello, it looks like blood. Did you even read the Wiki How link I sent you on being goth?(いいかい、血みたいに見えるだろ。
Raj: No, I'm behind on my wiki-reading I'm kind of on a John Grisham kick right now.(いや、wikiは後回しで、ジョン・グリシャムにはまってるんだ。)
Howard: What?
Raj: Well, I finished reading The Pelican Brief and loved it so much, I dived right into The Client. He was a lawyer himself so his novels are accurate as well as entertaining.( えーと、『ペリカン文書』を読み終わったけど、とても面白くて、今『依頼人』を読んでる。
Howard: Just remember we are lost boys*, children of the night.(僕らはロスト・ボーイ、夜の子だってことを忘れないでくれ。)
Raj: Great. Lost boys, children of the night. Got it. Can you pass the Chex mix, please. Thank you.
Girl: Good for you.(よかったね。)
Howard: I'm actually much more lost than he is.(僕の方が実際彼よりも迷ってるよ。)
Girl: Nice ink.(素敵なタトゥーね。)
Howard: Thanks. Can we buy you ladies a drink?(ありがとう。
Girl: Two light beers.(ライトビール2つ。)
Raj: Light beers? Well, Wiki-how about that?(ライトビール?
Second girl: What's your names?
Howard: I'm Howard.
Raj: Raj.
Girl: I'm Bethany.
Howard: Nice to meet you, Bethany.
Raj: Yes, very nice.
Bethany: Nice to meet you too.
Second girl: I'm Sarah. Not that anyone cares.(私はサラ、と言っても誰も気にかけてるわけじゃないけどね。)
Raj: Do either of you ladies enjoy the novels of John Grisham?(君達のどっちかジョン・グリシャムの小説を好きかい?)

[The apartment]
Penny: What's this cartoon called again?(この漫画なんて言うの、もう一回教えて?)
Leonard: Oshikuru: Demon Samurai.(オシクル:悪魔のサムライだ。)
Sheldon: And it's not a cartoon, it's anime.(それにそれは漫画じゃなくてアニメだよ。)
Penny: Anime. You know, I knew a girl in high school named Anna May. Anna May Fletcher. She was born with one nostril. Then she had this bad nose job and basically wound up with three.(アニメ。
Sheldon: You're here a lot now.
Penny: Oh, am I talking too much? I'm sorry.
Sheldon: Thank you.
Penny: Yes please.
(Her phone rings.)
Penny: Oh. Hey, Kim. Yeah, I…
(She sees Sheldon looking disapprovingly.) Penny: You know what, hold on, let me take this in the hall. (Sheldon silently offers her another chocolate. She takes it.)
Penny: You'll never guess who they got to replace you at work…(お店があなたの代わりに雇った人、きっと想像つかないわよ。)
Leonard: Okay, I know what you're doing.(オーケー、君が何をしてるかわかったよ。)
Sheldon: Really?
Leonard: Yes, you're using chocolates as positive reinforcement for what you consider correct behaviour.(君はチョコレートを、君が正しいと思う挙動の「正の強化子」として使ってるんだ。)
Sheldon: Very good.
Leonard: No, I don't want any chocolate! Sheldon, you can't train my girlfriend like a lab rat.(いや、僕はチョコレート欲しくない!
Sheldon: Actually, it turns out I can.(実際訓練できることが分かった。)
Leonard: Well, you shouldn't.(でもするべきじゃない。)
Sheldon: There's just no pleasing you, is there, Leonard? You weren't happy with my previous approach to dealing with her, so I decided to employ operant conditioning techniques, building on the work of Thorndike and B.F. Skinner. By this time next week, I believe I can have her jumping out of a pool, balancing a beach ball on her nose.(君は嬉しくないのかい、レナード?
Leonard: No, this has to stop now.(だめだ、今やめてよ。)
Sheldon: I'm not suggesting we really make her jump out of a pool. I thought the "bazinga" was implied. I'm just tweaking her personality, sanding off the rough edges if you will.(彼女を実際にプールから飛び出させるって言ってるんじゃないよ。
Leonard: No, you're not sanding Penny.(いや、君はペニーを削ってないよ。)
Sheldon: Are you saying that I'm forbidden from applying a harmless, scientifically valid protocol that will make our lives better?(僕らの生活をよりよくするのに、害のない科学的に有効な手順を僕は禁じられるって言うのかい?)
Leonard: Yes, you're forbidden.(そう、禁止だ。)
Sheldon: (Squirting him with a water spray) Bad Leonard.

[The goth club]
Bethany: So what do you guys do?(あなたたちは何の仕事しているの?)
Howard: Oh, you know, goth stuff.
Raj: Goth food.(ゴス食品。)
Sarah: What's goth food?(ゴス食品って何?)
Raj: Uh… blackened salmon?(うー、黒くした鮭?)
Bethany: No, I meant what do you do for jobs?(いいえ、職業のことよ?)
Raj: Oh, we're scientists.(おー、僕らは科学者だ。)
Howard: Yeah, you know, the dark sciences.(そう、つまり、暗い科学。)
Bethany: What are the dark sciences.(暗い科学って何?)
Raj: Well, I am an astrophysicist and a lot of that takes place at night. When there are vampires and miscellaneous undead out and about.(えーと、僕は宇宙科学者でいろいろ夜に起きるんだ。
Howard: Oy vay*.(ああ悲しいかな。) Oy vey iz mir"(Oh, woe is me!=ああ悲しいかな)の省略形。
Raj: That sounds really cool.
Howard: Does it? Okay, if you like space stuff, I design components for the international space station. Which is in space. Where, as I'm sure you know, no one can hear you scream.(本当?
Raj: So what do you gals do?(君達二人は何してるの?)
Bethany: I work at the Gap.(私はGapで働いてるわ。)
Howard: Really? How about that? I've been to the Gap.
Raj: Yeah, I've been there as well. I like your tee-shirts with the little pocket.(そう、僕も行ったことあるよ。
Sarah: I work there too. Not that anyone cares. You know, this place is boring.(私もそこで働いてるわ、と言っても誰も気にかけてるわけじゃないけどね。
Bethany: Yeah. Why don't we go somewhere else and have some fun?(そうね。
Howard: Okay.
Raj: Sure, we like fun.
Howard: We are fun people.
Raj: Dark and fun.
Bethany: Come on, I know a place you'll really dig.(行こう、あなたたちが本当に楽しめるとこ知ってるわ。)
Howard: Did you bring the black condoms?(君、黒のコンドーム持ってきたかい?)
Raj: In my fanny pack.(僕のウェスト・ポーチに入ってる。)
Howard: Let's go.

[A tattoo parlour]
(Bethany is getting a tattoo.)
Raj: Are you happy now?(今楽しいかい?)
Howard: Not particularly.(いや、特には。)

[The apartment]
Penny: (voice outside door) Oh' my God, she didn't!
Leonard: What could she possibly be talking about for so long?(彼女はなんのことであんなに長く話せるんだ?)
Sheldon: Obviously, waitressing at the Cheesecake Factory is a complex socioeconomic activity, that requires a great deal of analysis and planning. Bazinga! You know, using positive reinforcement techniques, I could train that behaviour out of her in a week.(明らかに、チーズファクトリーでのウェイトレス業は複雑な社会経済的活動で、多くの分析の計画が必要なんだ。
Leonard: No.
Sheldon: If you let me use negative reinforcement, I can get it done before we go to bed.(「
Leonard: You're not squirting her in the face with water.(彼女の顔に水を吹きかけないでよ。)
Sheldon: No, of course not. We're talking very mild electric shocks.
Leonard: Forget it.(もういいよ。)
Sheldon: Oh, come on, you can't tell me that you're not intrigued about the possibility of building a better girlfriend.(いいじゃないか。
Leonard: I'm not. And Penny's qualities, both good and bad, are what make her who she is.(興味ない。
Sheldon: You mean, like that high-pitched, irritating laugh?(あの甲高い、いらつく笑いもかい?)
Leonard: Yes.
Sheldon: You wouldn't prefer a throaty chuckle?(君は低いくすくす笑いの方が好きなんじゃないの?)
Leonard: You're not changing how Penny laughs.(君はペニーの笑い方を変えられないよ。)
Sheldon: No, that would be incongruous, I was going to lower the whole voice to a more pleasing register.(いや、それは不適当だ、僕は声全体をより好ましい音域に低くしようとしたんだ。)
Penny: (entering) Uh, sorry guys, that girl is (high pitched) freaky!(ごめんなさい。
Sheldon: Come again?
Penny: (normal voice) Freaky.
Sheldon: (lower voice) Freaky?
Penny: (lower voice) Yeah, freaky.
Sheldon: Have a chocolate.
Penny: Thank you.

[The tattoo parlour]
(Howard is laying down, preparing to have a tattoo on his lower back.)
Raj: Are you seriously going to deface your body just for the possibility you could have cheap sex with a strange girl you met in a bar?(君はバーで会った見知らぬ女の子と安っぽいセックスできる可能性のために、本当に体を傷つけるのか?)
Howard: Uh, yeah!
Raj: What is your mother going to say?(君の母さんはなんていうんだ?)
Howard: She's not going to see it. She takes my temperature orally now.(彼女はそれを見ることはない。
Bethany: What are you going to get, Howard?(どれにするの、ハワード?)
Howard: Well, I can't really decide between a screaming devil, this mean little skull or Kermit the Frog.(叫ぶ悪魔つまり不気味な小さいドクロと、カエルのカ-ミットのどちらにするか決められないよ。)
Bethany: Kermit the Frog?
Howard: You know (Kermit voice) Hi ho, I'm on Howard's butt!(つまり、ハイホー、僕はハワードのお尻に居るよ!)
Bethany: Get the mean little skull, and I'll see if I can make him smile.(不気味な小さいドクロにしなよ。
Howard: Yeah, I'd like the mean little skull, please.(不気味な小さいドクロにして下さい。)
Sarah: What are you going to get, Raj?(どれにするの、ラジ?)
Raj: With my luck, hepatitis.(運が良けりゃ、肝炎だ。)
Tattooist: Okay, here we go.
Howard: Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow!
Tattooist: That's just rubbing alcohol.(ただのアルコール消毒だよ。)
Howard: I know, but it was cold. Ow, ow, ow!
Tattooist: I'm putting on the stencil.(型紙置くよ。)
Howard: What comes after the stencil?(型紙置の後はなんだ?)
Tattooist: This.
Howard: Aaaaaargh! Okay, that's it, no needle, no pain, no tattoo.
Bethany: What's the big deal, you've done this before.(大したことないわ、前にもやったんでしょ?)
Howard: No, I haven't, look.
(Howard Rips off tattoo sleeves.)
Howard: I'm sorry, I'm a fraud, he's a fraud.(ごめん、僕はインチキ、彼もインチキだ。)
Raj: We're both frauds.
Howard: Yeah, I think I covered that.
Raj: But I was summing up.
Howard: We're not goth, we're just guys.
Raj: Very, very smart guys.
Bethany: So you were totally scamming us?(じゃあ、あんた達私たちをだましてたの?)
Howard: Yes. And I wouldn't blame you if you walked out of here and never wanted to see us again. Unless of course our bold honesty has suddenly made us attractive.(そうだ、君達がここを出た後二度と僕らに会いたいと思わなくても文句を言うつもりはないよ。
Bethany: I'm leaving.
Sarah: I'm leaving too. Not that anyone cares.(私も行くわ、誰も構わないだろうけどね。)
Raj: When we tell this story, let's end it differently.(誰かにこの話するときは違う結果にしようね。)
Howard: What are you thinking?

[The apartment]
Sheldon: Well, I'm going to make some warm milk and then turn in. I trust if you two are planning in engaging in amorous activites, you'll keep the decibel level to a minimum.(さあ、僕は暖かいミルクを作ってそれから床に入る。
Penny: Of course.
Sheldon: Thank you.
(He throws a chocolate. Penny catches it in her mouth)
Penny: Mmm, these are so good
Leonard: Unbelievable.
Penny: What?
Leonard: I was just thinking, we should probably turn in too.(僕らも床に入った方がいいって思ってたんだ。)
Penny: Well, my new bed got delivered, if you come over and put it together, you can stay at my place.(私の新しいベッドが配達されたの。
Leonard: Really, that's a lot of work, and it's kind of late.(本当、でも作業大変そうだし、もう遅いから。)
Penny: Yeah, but if we stay there, we won't have to be quiet.(そうね、でももしあっちで寝れたら、静かにする必要ないわ。)
Leonard: Let's go.
Sheldon: Interesting. Sex works even better than chocolate to modify behaviour. I wonder if anyone else has stumbled on to that.(おもしろい。

[Raj's car]
Howard: Okay, wait, how about this? We say there were four goth girls, the two girls in the club had two friends.(オーケー、待って、こんなのはどうだい?
Raj: I like it, I like it. Did they smell good despite their gothlike nature?(いいね、いいね。
Howard: What's that got to do with the story?(それってこのストーリーとどんな関係があるんだ?)
Raj: Engaging my olfactory sense helps make it real for me.(嗅覚を使うとリアルに感じるんだ。)
Howard: Fine, they smelled good.(なるほど、彼女たちはいい匂いだったよ。)
Raj: Oh, they did. Like jasmine and honeysuckle.(おー、そうか。
Howard: Whatever.
Raj: And then they held hands and did a sexy, demonic hokey-pokey for us.(それから彼女らは手を取って、セクシーで悪魔的なまやかしをしたんだ。)
Howard: No, no. Look, let me say my story all the way through, and then you can say yours, and then we'll pick.(違うよ、いいかい、終いまで話をさせてくれ、それから君の話をすればいい、そしたらそれを取り上げよう。)
Raj: I'm sorry. Go on.
Howard: Okay. We got tattoos, and then the four girls took us to their place.(オーケー、僕らはタトゥーを入れた。
Raj: But we don't have tattoos. What if someone asks to see our tattoos?(でも僕らはタトゥーを入れてない。
Howard: We say they're in a very intimate area.(あそこに入れたって言うのさ。)
Raj: Oh, we are bad boys, aren't we?
Howard: Right, right, so we go back to their place, and then the six of us end up in a hot tub.(わかった、わかった、そして僕らは彼女らの家に行って、6人でお風呂に入ったんだ。)
Raj: But we just got tattoos. Wouldn't we be concerned about bacterial infection?(でも、僕らはタトゥーを入れたばかりだ。
Howard: True. Okay, forget the hot tub. The point is, we each have a me'nage with sexy goth girls.(その通り、オーケー、浴槽のことは忘れよう。
Raj: Wow. What a great night.(素晴らしい夜だ。)
Howard: Yeah. Hey, want to try a country bar tomorrow night.(そうだ、ヘイ、明日の夜はカントリー・バーに行かないか。)
Raj: Yeah, maybe we'll get lucky with some sexy cowgirls.(そうだね、僕ら運よくセクシーなカントリー・ガールに出会えるよ。)
Howard: Could happen.(かもね。)
Raj: I wonder how they smell.(彼女たちどんな匂いするんだろ。)
