Accommodation

Hostels or guest houses are accommodations featuring shared bedrooms and facilities in return for low rates typically between 2000 and 4500 JPY per person and night. They commonly offer dormitory rooms with double-storied bunk beds shared by four to eight people and are often gender segregated. Some hostels also offer private rooms with higher rates. Toilets and bathrooms are usually shared and amenities are limited, but some hostels provide towels or rent them for a small fee. Some examples are listed below.

Tip: Local people are regarded to have different characteristics in Japan. For example, Tokyoites are cool, snobbish, businesslike like New Yorkers; Osakans are friendly, openminded like Latin people; while Kyotoites are sarcastic, euphemistic like Londoners or Parisians. The joke says that if the food is not good in a restaurant, the Tokyoites will eat silently, leave quickly and never come back again; the Osakans will complain noisily but continue to eat; and the Kyotoites will go and meet the manager discreetly after eating and tell him/her in a posh Kyoto accent that the food left nothing to be desired as a sarcasm.
